Research
EIMT is scientifically substantiated, developed, and evaluated within a PhD research project (Aalbers, 2021), in which a Cochrane review shows that music therapy can reduce depressive and anxiety symptoms and improve functioning. A process evaluation and impact study demonstrate that EIMT is feasible and can reduce depressive symptoms and promote emotion regulation. Ongoing SonaNova projects conduct in-depth research into EIMT and provide insight into needs, effects, and what works and why.
Conducting research together
At SonaNova, we conduct practice-based research on Emotion-regulating improvised music therapy (EIMT) and its application in depression and emotion regulation. We collaborate with various partners and are open to new research projects. Organizations interested in commissioning research, or students interested in gaining experience with practice-based research, are welcome to contact us to explore the possibilities.
Music therapy can reduce depressive symptoms; EIMT promotes emotion regulation as a key to recovery.
EIMT is easily implemented and shows improved emotion regulation and fewer depressive symptoms in adults.
A clear structure, the attitude of the music therapist and the synchronization technique can partly explain the effects of EIMT.
